2017 Possible – Sicily & Malta

Sicily is one third the size of  Tasmania, but, with a strategic position half way across the Mediterranean with less than 200 kms to Northern Africa, it has always boasted a mixture of civilisations.  At least 13 different empires or nations have influenced it with the Italians finally taking over in 1860.  The architecture, infrastructure, music, food, government and administrative systems are a blend of Greek, Roman, Arabic, Norman, Spanish and French, just to name a few.

It is a very beautiful island with Mt. Etna dominating the background and classic sandy beaches, blue water and hill towns built in Baroque and Romanesque styles.  Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor spent part of one honeymoon in Taormina, Horatio Nelson owned a house here and numerous films including Cinema Paradiso and The Godfather make its terrain very familiar.

The Aeolian Islands off the north shore boast Vulcano, the namesake of all volcanoes, plus Stromboli, with good walking and relaxing, overlooking the sea, and Malta, to the south boasts amazing scenery from Valletta in every direction. Whether you love wandering the narrow streets of Medieval towns or relaxing under an umbrella with a cool “vino” and fascinating local food, you will enjoy the birthplace of both gelato, cassata and marsala among other delicacies.
